Aarong was established in 1978 to provide economic stability to village artisans and underprivileged rural women. It is the marketing arm of BRAC, a non-governmental organisation which aims to alleviate poverty and empower the poor.

It upholds Bangladesh's traditional craft and culture, and serves as a means for the artisans of Bangladesh to restore their sense of pride and self-esteem.
